JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – To honor the efforts of State Representative Kevin Corlew for his work on improving the criminal justice system, the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (MAPA) recently awarded him with the Legislative “Champion of Justice” award.  In particular, the award recognized Corlew’s efforts to improve expert-witness standards and to determine the appropriate punishment for teenagers convicted of first-degree murder.

“I am honored to receive this award,” said Corlew, R-Kansas City. “During the campaign last year, I made public safety a priority, based on conversations with constituents.  I was proud to be able to work on legislation this past session that would help crime victims and improve the justice system.”

Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd is on the MAPA board and was on hand in September when the association presented its legislative awards in Osage Beach, MO.  “Rep. Kevin Corlew cares deeply about justice for victims of crime, while also protecting the rights of the accused,” remarked Zahnd.  “His efforts to improve the reliability of expert-witness testimony and to ensure that teen killers are punished appropriately are to be commended.  As one of only two legislators to receive the Legislative Champion award, the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys thanks Kevin Corlew for being a true champion of justice.”

Corlew represents House District 14 in the Missouri General Assembly.  The district encompasses parts of southeast Platte County and southwest Clay County.  He is a member of both the House Select Judiciary Committee and the Standing Committee on Civil and Criminal Proceedings.
